Let's talk about Memorial Day weekend. We often forget the purpose of Memorial Day. It's to honor those Americans who have died in wartime service for our Nation. It used to be called Decoration Day, the day many decorated the graves of those who died at war. Now Memorial Day honors not only those who have died, but those who are currently serving in our military service.
As some of you know, my husband, John Campbell, is currently leading the Pentagon's efforts to care for our wounded warriors as well as to support all military service members transitioning to civilian life. He was in Colorado Springs a week ago for the Warrior games, the Olympic games for wounded warriors. He was at a loss to describe his feelings about the event, and the honor it is to serve those military service members who have sacrificed for the rest of us.
It's summed up pretty well in this YouTube video of one wounded warrior, Freddie Delossantos, a hand cyclist who crossed the finish line despite the fact that the chain on his cycle broke two kilometers back. He finished by pushing the wheels with his hands...and made it.
Thank you, Freddie, for inspiring all of us to have the courage to finish what we start despite the obstacles that may fall in our way. And thank you, John, for all you are doing to ensure that Freddie and all those like him, get the support they deserve.
This Memorial Day, start at least one conversation about our Nation's warriors and why we honor them. And say thank you to every service member you see.
