The OMM's Talk To JC Penney about Ellen DeGeneres

Who, you may ask, are the OMM's? They are members of One Million Moms, a right wing conservative group that is burning up the phone lines calling JC Penney headquarters, as well as placing calls to local JC Penney store managers, demanding that JC Penney fire Ellen DeGeneres, their new spokeswoman.

Well, One Million Moms may sound like serious firepower for a boycott but maybe not.  Ellen DeGeneres has many millions of fans and they buy stuff, too.  So I'd say this is a wasted effort, at least on OMM's side of the picture.  In truth, they are probably giving JC Penney a badly needed boost as the once formidable retail giant is making major efforts to capture the hearts and pocketbooks of American consumers, many of whom regard JC Penney as an old fuddy duddy store chain.  The OMM's have made JC Penney a news item.  And that's a good thing for JC Penney, cheaper than advertising. 

Apparently, the OMM'S start their phone conversations with a barrage of rhetoric about Ellen's openly gay lifestyle and what a bad role model she is.  Hmmm.  The few times I've seen her show, it appeared to be a wholesome series of conversations about mainstream issues and events.  She seems pretty middle of the road to me.  Oh, right, she's gay.  Yeah, but who besides the OMM's care about that?

There are so many important conversations we need to have in this country about how to make our schools relevant in this technical age, how to create jobs for the out of work, how to provide needed health care to the poor.  Somehow fighting Ellen DeGeneres's role in promoting JC Penney isn't at the top of my can't miss conversation topics.
